The Sacred Splendor of Kolhapur’s Mahalaxmi Temple
The Shri Mahalaxmi Temple of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India, holds significant religious importance as one of the three-and-a-half Shakti Peethas mentioned in Hindu Puranas.
Believed to be a place associated with Shakti, the goddess of power, this temple is revered as a site where devotees can fulfill their desires or attain salvation.
The temple’s architecture, dating back to the Chalukya empire around 700 AD, showcases intricate craftsmanship and symbolic imagery.
Central to the temple is the image of Ambabai/Mahalaxmi, a four-armed and crowned goddess made of sandstone. Carved in black stone and standing 2 feet 8.5 inches tall, the deity holds symbolic objects, including a citrus fruit, a mace, a shield, and a bowl.
Unlike most Hindu sacred images, this deity faces west, with sun rays directly illuminating her face during specific days of the year.
The temple complex includes shrines dedicated to deities like Datta Mandir, Navagrahas, Surya, Mahishasuramardini, Vitthal-Rakhmai, Krishna, and others. Additionally, the Upper Temple houses an icon of Ganapati and a rectangular Shivalinga known as Matulinga.
King Gandaraditya embellished the temple complex with two additional sanctums dedicated to Mahakali and Mahasaraswati.
The temple’s architecture features intricately carved halls and archways, such as the Rangamandap and Kurma Mandap, adorned with sculpted patterns and designs.

The Ganpati Chowk houses a shrine dedicated to Lord Ganapati, surrounded by statues of Sage Agasti and other deities. The Garud Mandap, added in the 19th century, further enriches the temple complex.
Excessive carvings embellish the walls outside the main temple, depicting Surasundaris and dancing Apsaras. Five spires and domes, added in modern times, form a cross-like structure over the temple.
The Navagraha Temple, located within the complex, features idols of nine planets and Lord Vishnu reclining on Shesha. The temple complex is surrounded by a pentagonal stone wall with four entrances, including the main entrance, Mahadwar, and Purva Darwaja on the east.
The complex also includes the Nagarkhana, where musical instruments are played during rituals, and a kitchen where meals for the deity are prepared.
The daily worship services highlight the temple’s religious significance, including the Kakad Aarti at 5.30 am. It is believed that the Sun god pays homage to Mahalaxmi for three days each year during Ratha Saptami.
